Statement by Eloise Todd, Pandemic Action Network’s Executive Director and Co-Founder, regarding progress toward the replenishment of The Pandemic Fund.
“Today’s pledging moment was an important step forward to finance The Pandemic Fund. Today we made a start. We are delighted that The Pandemic Fund has reached nearly 50% of its pledging target of US$2 billion — but more is needed to meet and exceed this target. We are already experiencing mpox, Marburg, and other outbreaks, and experts predict that there is more than a 50% chance of another COVID-like pandemic happening within the next generation.
We need to get all countries on board and contributing to The Pandemic Fund — we cannot have any country play roulette with their people and economies by opting for inaction. We have the tools and knowledge to prevent this and relatively modest investments in prevention and preparedness now will save trillions of dollars in a future crisis and every country will benefit. Now is the time for new and robust financial pledges to The Pandemic Fund.”
